Folded Motion ® XT Obsidian Tweeter

MartinLogan's Folded Motion tweeter is a marvel of audio engineering. Its folded thin-film diaphragm gives it a much larger surface area than traditional dome tweeters of the same size. This “squeezed” design also requires significantly less excursion than a dome tweeter, revealing controlled dispersion characteristics and incredibly low distortion. These tiny tweeters mimic the high-frequency detail and slew rate of a large electrostatic panel in a small space.

The Masterpiece CI Series takes things a step further with Folded Motion XT Obsidian tweeters, which further advance thin-film transducer technology.

The Folded Motion XT design features a 40% larger radiating surface and a controlled 80 x 30-degree dispersion. Powerful mid-range and bass drivers with multi-section unidirectional carbon fibre cones with Nomex mounts

Masterpiece CI speakers feature custom-made cones using unidirectional carbon fibre, a material that is twice as strong as steel but one-sixth the density, for exceptional rigidity without excess weight. They are designed in multiple sections to take full advantage of the material's benefits.

Each cone is braced with a Nomex mount, providing additional damping that prevents boominess and reduces failure modes in these extremely rigid cones. The drivers feature powerful, efficient magnetic structures, which enable massive excursion and enormous sound output, while preserving deep bass detail, even at sustained, lifelike volume levels.

Masterpiece CI features innovation upon innovation To deliver greater accuracy in the critical midrange, the mid-frequency drivers have their suspensions (spiders and surrounds) "stiffened". Suspension stiffening raises the driver's resonant frequency and optimizes its performance for a more natural roll-off, keeping it inherently in an ideal range for mid-frequency reproduction.

Each cone includes a concave dust cap that adds additional strength and rigidity, further reducing breakup modes.

Phenolic baffle and sealed back box

A key to replicating the performance of traditional loudspeakers with hidden and integrated drivers is the use of sealed, volume-controlled back boxes.

Statement The 40XW, Monument 7XW, Tribute 5XW and Icon 3XW feature incredibly dense phenolic resin polymer baffles, with an aluminium faceplate. This phenolic resin polymer is the same material we use in Neolith's massive acoustically inert cabinet. It offers an extraordinary material consistency that naturally minimises harmful resonances and vibrations.

Masterpiece CI back boxes fit standard stud walls. They provide a controlled and predictable air space (volume) within which the specially designed drivers can perform at their best. The sealed enclosure removes variables such as wall cavity size and construction quality from the acoustic equation, ensuring consistent, accurate performance regardless of installation specifications.

In addition, the hermetically sealed design prevents sound from leaking through walls.
